What actually happens when you make a food truck insurance claim

A realistic look at the claims process for equipment damage, vehicle incidents and public liability in mobile food businesses.

Buying insurance is one decision; successfully claiming on it later is another. Mobile food businesses have some of the messiest claims experiences in small business insurance, mostly because of poor record-keeping at the time of purchase, not because insurers are unusually difficult.

Proof of ownership and value is the first thing you'll need

A claim for a damaged generator or fryer needs proof you owned it and what it was worth — a purchase receipt and, ideally, a photo of the item and its serial number taken before anything went wrong. Reconstructing this after an incident is far harder.

Document the incident immediately, not later

Photos of the damage, a written note of what happened and when, and any witness details collected at the time carry far more weight than a description written from memory two weeks later when the claim form finally gets filled in.

Public liability claims move slower than equipment claims

A customer injury or property damage claim against your public liability cover typically takes weeks to months, involves the insurer investigating independently, and benefits enormously from your own incident report being detailed and contemporaneous.

Vehicle claims interact with your trading calendar

A truck off the road for repairs isn't just a vehicle cost — it's every event you can't trade until it's back. Some policies offer loss-of-income cover for exactly this; check whether yours does before you need it, not after.

Common reasons claims get delayed or reduced

Missing maintenance records, an expired gas certificate at the time of an incident, or equipment that wasn't declared on the policy are the most common reasons payouts get reduced or challenged — all avoidable with organised records.

Keep everything an insurer might ask for in one place

CartFlow's equipment tracking stores purchase value, photos, service history and certificates against every asset, so if you ever need to make a claim, the evidence is already assembled rather than needing to be found under pressure.
